As you can imagine, Paris is full of art galleries. The Louvre is fantastic but my interest tends towards the contemporary arts. One of my favourites is Gaite Lyrique, a wonderful new venue dedicated to the digital arts. As well as a very large gallery space, it includes a store, cafe, theatre, games area and resource centre. It’s a great place where anyone can experiment, study and experience all forms of contemporary art, music, performance art and digital design.

Currently in the process of finalising this piece and for a change, I’ve decided that instead of hiding the hardware and electronics behind the canvas, I should showcase them right up front. The idea of highlighting the electronics appeals to me and gives me a chance to develop the sculptural side of these works.

Based on a simplified, custom built, Arduino based microcontroller board, this work drives four large, 16cm high red seven segment displays and is currently programmed to count up to 9999 before pausing, resetting then starting over again.

As outlined in an earlier post, this shows the current status of this particular work. The controller circuit board, associated custom electronics and program software are also well under way. It utilises an Atmega 168 (a cut down Arduino similar to this one) driving each of the 14 SMD LED boards via 2 x ULN2003 IC’s. These IC’s basically switch the external power supply on or off to power the LED boards. The end result will be a smooth “breathing” type gradual illumination of each board in a number of preprogrammed sequences.
