Brisbane Flood images and consequences
With flood warnings for Brisbane city commuters scramble to get out of the city causing a very early midday peak hour. Power to the CBD was soon cut off and all that everyone could do was move possessions to higher ground and wait for the peak. As huge crowds gathered on the Kangaroo Point Cliffs which overlook the river and city, the whole area was a buzz of activity. News helicopters from every television network flew overhead recording not only the flood waters as they creeped into low lying areas, but also the huge amount of river traffic made up of emergency service boats, massive pieces of floating debris including complete boats, some of which were still tied to their jetties which had broken away with the force of the water. Other choppers carrying Anna Bligh and Julia Gillard flew by surveying the damage.
At night, the freeway was almost deserted as access to many areas became impossible. The normally peaceful river however raged on sounding more like a very fast flowing rapid.
Because the Rowland workplace in the city was one of the buildings facing inundation, it’s entire workforce of over 80 people were forced to remain at home and service our clients as well as we could under the circumstances.
Almost 10 days have passed since the water receded but our office remains out of bounds due to flood damage throughout its basement and it will be at least another 5 days before we’re allowed back in. Believe it or not, I can’t wait to get back.
